Mar 31 - Apr 1    DOCUTAH @ The Electric presents "Sunshine Superman"

Before there were selfies and Go Pro cameras, Carl Boenish, the father of the extreme sport known as BASE jumping, was obsessed with chronicling “what one saw from starting way up and shooting straight down.” Now DOCUTAH@TheELECTRIC brings Sunshine Superman, the heart-racing documentary portrait of Boenish, (at times described as a California nerd), whose early passion for skydiving led him to ever more spectacular -and dangerous- feats of foot-launched human flight, to the Electric Theater in St. George on March 31st and the Bumbleberry Theater on April 1, both at 7 P.M. A qualified electrical engineer, Boenish drifted from his career after he was given the opportunity to direct aerial photography on The Gypsy Moths, a 1969 Burt Lancaster skydiving movie (yes, it exists). This kindled a new passion and soon Boenish would be doing everything with an unwieldy 16mm camera strapped to his helmet, decades before anyone thought of a Go Pro. Both screenings will be hosted by Director and Writer, Marah Strauch.
Viewers will experience his jaw-dropping journey in life and love, to the pinnacle of his achievements when he and wife Jean broke the BASE jumping Guinness World Record in 1984 on the Norwegian ‘Troll Wall’ mountain range. Told through a stunning mix of Carl’s 16mm archive footage, well-crafted re-enactments and state-of-the-art aerial photography, Sunshine Superman will leave you breathless and inspired.
According to the interview in The Guardian, Strauch was only able to make her movie because of Boenish’s obsession with filming every jump he made. When she found some of Boenish’s footage among the belongings of her late uncle, himself a skydiver, she was instantly fascinated. “I hadn’t seen any other footage like this,” she says. “I was a visual artist transitioning into making films, and Carl’s footage was really different to what I had seen before. This was beautiful 16mm footage, and these people wanted to show a point of view that other people don’t see. I loved the poetry of what Carl Boenish was showing. It was romantic.”
“Films such as Sunshine Superman demonstrate to audiences that real-life adventure is much more heart pounding, much more exciting than fictional adventure films or video games,” said Phil Tuckett, Executive Director of the DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival and DOCUTAH@TheELECTRIC. “The lineup for the remainder of the year through August touches on subjects both foreign and domestic but all of which reveal common human conditions and emotions. So far the reception we have received in this second season of DOCUTAH@TheELECTRIC, which leads up to the DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival each year in September lets us know that our audience agrees.”
Reservations are required because of limited space at each theater and may be reserved online at http://docutah.com/sunshine-superman/.

Apr 5    Chamber Inspirational Luncheon featuring Huntsman World Senior Games CEO Kyle Case
The HUNTSMAN WORLD SENIOR GAMES, as it is known today, began in 1987 as the World Senior Games, an international senior sports competition. Founded by Daisy and John H. Morgan, Jr., the Games began with their vision of an international sports event for men and women ages 55 and better. Both agreed that the golden years were better when good health and physical fitness became a way of life, not an occasional hobby.
In 1989 Jon M. Huntsman, Chairman of the Huntsman Corporation, became the Games' principal sponsor after recognizing that the Games not only fostered lifetime fitness, but also expanded Utah's economic vitality. A proud supporter of the Games, the Huntsman family continues to open the Games personally, with a warm welcome to the athletes and the lighting of the torch in traditional Olympic fashion during the Opening Ceremonies.
Since its inception, the Games have been open to all men and women meeting the age requirement. The second year of the Games the age requirement was reduced from age 55 to age 50 to include more athletes and to encourage those looking at retirement to become involved in a personal fitness program or team sport.
A small full-time staff works year round and is joined by more than 2,500 eager seasonal volunteers to host 30 athletic events over a two-week period each October. Headquartered in Southern Utah, the HUNTSMAN WORLD SENIOR GAMES has become a renowned event among serious athletes from Japan to Russia and from Alaska to Australia. Scores of countries have participated in the GAMES, where peace among nations is fostered through friendly competition.
In addition to athletic events, the Games promote health by providing life saving health screenings for cancer-breast and prostate. Screenings also detect other serious health threats--glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and decreased bone density. Volunteer medical and nursing students assist with the screenings and generous sponsors provide diagnostic equipment and services.
As time marches on, the HUNTSMAN WORLD SENIOR GAMES will continue to host this one of a kind celebration promoting worldwide Peace, Health, Friendship, and as founder John Morgan reminds us, “Fun! Don't forget the Fun!”

Apr 7 - Apr 8    Professional Bull Riders
Buckle up. The PBR IS COMING TO TUACAHN!
This is not a rodeo. We don't rope calves, and we don't chase barrels.
This is bull riding, and the first rule is just to stay alive.
The Professional Bull Riders was created in 1992 when a group of 20 visionary bull riders broke away from the traditional rodeo scene seeking mainstream attention for the sport of professional bull riding.
The combination of raw sport and quality entertainment has propelled the PBR to strong growth in live attendance as well. The PBR attracts over 1.5 million live event attendees each year with its multi-tiered event structure.
Professional bull riding is a fierce, rough, and grueling sport with roots deeply imbedded in American culture. It's America's original extreme sport.

Apr 12    Chamber Training Series featuring Neil Staker

This month's training will feature Neil Staker, who will give us insight into team building and collaborating.  The title of his presentation is:  "TALK IS CHEAP, MISUNDERSTANDINGS ARE EXPENSIVE."

The free flow of information and feedback are critical to working together and making the right decisions—but it isn't easy.  We talk about the same things over and over, we avoid and argue, we try sarcasm and being passive aggressive.  What works?  Join Neil Staker for an amazing hour.  You'll laugh, you'll gain incredible insight, and you'll walk away with tools to talk more effectively in any situation.

Neil can be a boring guy. He hasn’t seen a movie since the Reagan administration. Ask him what he likes to do for fun, and he’ll answer: “Yardwork.” (Seriously.) But talk to him about people, organizations, or improvement and out of that dull cocoon a fascinating butterfly will emerge. He’s turned his tightly-wound practicality into a decades-long career helping companies increase efficiency. Clients find him personable, knowledgable, and incredibly helpful.

Boasts:
·         Master of Organizational Behavior
·         20+ years in organizational development
·         Adopted special needs girl from China

Confessions:
·         Completely, thoroughly nonathletic
·         Neil gets more tickets than a theater usher

Apr 19    Chamber Connect featuring Val Hale, Governor's Office of Economic Development

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development charter is based on Governor Herbert’s commitment to economic development statewide.
The mandate for this office is to provide rich business resources for the creation, growth and recruitment of companies to Utah and to increase tourism and film production in the state.
The Governor’s Office of Economic Development accomplishes this mission through the administration of programs that are based around industries or “economic clusters” that demonstrate the best potential for development. The Governor’s Office of Economic Development utilizes state resources and private sector contracts to fulfill its mission.
Vision of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development
Utah will lead the nation as the best performing economy and will be recognized as the premier global business environment and tourist destination.
Mission of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development
GOED’s mission is to enhance quality of life by increasing Utah’s revenue base and improving employment opportunities.
Six Objectives:
Monitor, improve and promote the economic health of both urban and rural communities.
Attract new investors and companies while supporting the expansion of existing Utah businesses.
Assist entrepreneurs and engage under-represented populations in starting new companies and growing existing businesses.
Expand tourism and the infrastructure to support it.
Encourage film production in the state.
Support and leverage both partner agencies and community leaders to create proactive, unique economic development solutions statewide.

Val Hale is the executive director of the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), which promotes state growth in business, tourism and film. Hale was appointed to the position in 2014 by Gov. Gary R. Herbert.

Before accepting the position as executive director, Hale served for two years as president and CEO of the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce, leading efforts in business community issues— including regional economic development and branding initiatives.

Prior to serving in the chamber, Hale was vice president (2010-2012) for university relations at Utah Valley University (UVU), overseeing legislative affairs, marketing and public, media and community relations. From 2006-2010, Hale worked as advancement vice president at the university, responsible for fund raising and all university external activities. During this time, Hale played a key role in transitioning Utah Valley State College into Utah Valley University. Hale started at UVU as the assistant vice president for external affairs (2005-2006), where he served as legislative liaison and oversaw community relations and economic development activities.

Before his career at UVU, Hale began working for the Brigham Young University (BYU) Athletic Department in 1982 and continued with the department for 22 years. He started as promotions and publications coordinator, working his way up in the department until his promotion to athletic director in 1999. Hale left a cherished legacy of athletic department improvements. His success in fundraising resulted in the construction of Miller Park, the Student Athlete Building, the Indoor Practice Facility and the Legacy Seats in the LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Hale received his bachelor’s degree in public relations in 1981 and a master’s degree in communications in 1987—both from BYU. Hale worked as a reporter at the Daily Herald from 1981-1982, covering business, government and BYU.

Hale and his wife have three children and 11 grandchildren, and he currently resides in Orem, UT.

Apr 26    Meet the Chamber at Magleby's/Crystal Inn

This Meet the Chamber luncheon will be at the new Magleby's located at the Crystal Inn.

Thirty years ago, retired dentist David “Doc” Parkinson (1930–2014) had a dream to share truly great food with the world. That dream led to the original Magleby’s restaurant, and for over 20 years Doc greeted Magleby’s customers at the door with world-famous breadsticks and a warm welcome.
Our Utah Valley family has been serving the community the best food for decades, and thanks to Lenora Parkinson, Doc’s wonderful wife of 50 years, Magleby’s dessert recipes have become legendary.
When it comes to life, Doc never did anything halfway. Whether it was riding 400,000 miles on his three motorcycles, playing 127 holes of golf in one day, or always asking himself “What Would Christ Do?” Doc was an avid life-lover. And that same passion is found in Magleby’s food.
By pushing his limits to always achieve excellence, Doc created a culinary brand where presentation, taste, and service are all equally important. And once culinary excellence is achieved, that excellence should be shared with everyone—including all the people of Utah Valley.
Doc’s son, Richard, now manages Magleby’s newest restaurants, Magleby’s at Trivani and The Grotto. Both are located in a historic building on Springville’s Main Street and offer uniquely fantastic dining experiences.
MAGLEBY’S AT TRIVANI serves the traditional Magleby’s menu that our customers have loved since we first opened in the Village Green.
THE GROTTO is the newest Magleby’s achievement and is now a premium steakhouse serving USDA Prime steaks.

Apr 27    Clint Black in Concert at Tuacahn
Clint Black is back.  The multi-million selling country mega-star is releasing On Purpose, his first full-length album of new songs in a decade and he’s doing it on his own terms.
“To me, it’s only a ‘comeback’ in that I’m putting out something new,” says the award-winning singer-songwriter. “As someone who has never stopped working, I don’t see me as having gone away, as I tour extensively, write and produce for television, films as well as other artists."
Black’s On Purpose compiles a strikingly diverse group of his self-produced songs. His ballads “Only One Way to Live,” “Stay Gone,” “Breathing Air” and “The Last Day” have never cut deeper, while his spirited “Beer” and “Better and Worse” are among the most upbeat songs he has ever crafted. “Time For That,” “Doing It Now For Love” and “Summertime Song” are catchy examples of how groove-soaked his music can be.
The lilting “You Still Get to Me” marks Black’s third duet with his wife, actress Lisa Hartman Black. “Calling It News” is a wry, topical statement. “The Trouble” is colored by Australian slang.
