Nov 8    Chamber Training Series featuring Jack Rolfe

Join us for this Wednesday's Chamber Training Series as we learn how to find our own life changing moment.

How does a fifty-year-old Mormon end up being enrolled as a student at the University of Notre Dame? Jack Rolfe did it by spending a lifetime of discovering, developing and delivering his unique purpose in life. Then, after four years of rigorous study and sacrifice, he found himself approaching the platform erected inside the Edmund P. Joyce Center on graduation day May 18, 2013. He was being awarded a Masters Degree in Nonprofit Administration with honors from the Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame. He glanced upward to see his image being broadcast upon the overhead Jumbotron screen in the beautiful sporting arena. Jack could not hold back the anticipation of being handed his diploma and completing the walk across that magnificent stage. He felt deeply that this was about to be his “27 seconds” at this institution that would change his life forever.

Mr. Rolfe is the Founder and CEO of the School of Life Foundation. This 501(c)3 nonprofit organization has a mission to increase high school graduation rates and is accomplishing this by working with hundreds of at-risk youth by partnering with numerous school districts across Utah. The character building curriculum taught by the School of Life Foundation is contained in Mr. Rolfe's book "Learn to 'School' Your Toughest Opponent." Mr. Rolfe is a professional speaker and had the honor of speaking at the First Annual National Mentoring Summit held at the Library of Congress. In addition he has spoke at the Play Like A Champion Today Conference as well as numerous Colleges and Universities. Mr. Rolfe is a former high school girls basketball coach and physical therapist. He and his wife, Lexie, have five children, twelve grandchildren and currently reside in St. George, Utah. His Notre Dame cohort dubbed him the Silver Fox!

Nov 28    Dixie Forum: A Window to the World

Dixie State University’s weekly lecture series Dixie Forum: A Window on the World will host a presentation on natural hazards that impact the St. George area.

Dr. Rick Miller will present “Death and Destruction: Geological hazards in Washington County, Utah”.

In his Dixie Forum presentation, Miller will discuss the major geologic province boundary between the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin, where Washington County is located. Because of the various geologic processes associated with this boundary and the provinces, geological hazards such as landslides and slumps, floods, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes have impacted the area in the past and will likely continue to do so in the future. Miller will discuss each of these hazards and provide local examples.

Miller’s research has been published in more than 50 publications. He researched and taught at California State University, Northridge and San Diego State University before teaching at Dixie State from 2010 to 2015.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from CSUN, a master’s degree in geology from the University of California, Los Angeles, performed graduate studies in geology at the University of Texas, Austin, and received his doctorate from UCLA.

Dixie Forum is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George and Dixie State communities to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. In the last presentation of the Fall 2017 semester, Dixie Forum will host Dr. Randolph Lewis of Utah State University, as he presents on his spider silk research at noon on Dec. 5 in the Dunford Auditorium.

Nov 29    Star of Bethlehem and other Celestial Wonders: Lecture with Ron Smith
The 23rd chapter in the New Testament of the Christian Bible is where the apostle Matthew gives us the famous account of the Christmas Star. Could this story of a star seen at the time of Christ’s birth be an astronomical event? On Wednesday, November 29, Ron Smith will present a program often shown at major planetariums across the country. Professor Smith will examine the Star of Bethlehem description found in the Book of Matthew, and then see if a supernova, a comet, a fireball meteor, or a grouping of planets might account for this remarkable event. Enjoy learning some biblical history, some facts about our calendar, and a bit of astronomy in a Christmas themed program. Ron Smith is a very popular speaker. We sold out his last lecture. Seating is limited so get yours now! Let the Kayenta Arts Foundation be part of your Holiday celebration. Doors will open at 6:30. The program begins promptly at 7:00. *No one will be admitted after the presentation begins

Nov 30    Poetry Reading at Dixie State University

As part of its Visiting Writers Program, Dixie State University's English Department is hosting a poetry reading featuring nationally recognized, award-winning poet Kimberly Johnson.

Johnson, a professor of English at Brigham Young University, will read from her three collections of poetry.  A book sale and signing as well as the opportunity to engage with Johnson will follow the reading.

"We are thrilled to host a poet of Kimberly Johnson's caliber on our campus,” Dr. Cindy King, DSU assistant professor of English, said. “Surely both students and our community alike will find her work inspiring and enlightening. I can think of no better way to encourage aspiring writers than to expose them to the outstanding work of writers like Johnson."

Johnson’s most recent poetry collection, “Uncommon Prayer,” was published by Persea in 2014. With her spouse, Jay Hopler, Johnson edited “Before the Door of God: An Anthology of Devotional Poetry” with Yale University Press in 2013. Additionally, she has published poems in translation from Latin and Greek and a number of critical works on Renaissance literature.

In addition to having her poems widely printed in publications such as The New Yorker, Slate and The Iowa Review, Johnson has received prizes from the Guggenheim Foundation, Merton Foundation and the Utah Arts Council and a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. At BYU, Johnson teaches creative writing and Renaissance literature. In both subjects, her primary interest is lyric poetry.

“Johnson’s poems adopt a number of their forms from mystical or sacred texts — psalms, divinations, odes, hymns, spells — but her settings are as earthbound as her own scorched backyard garden or the driver’s seat of a white pickup careering down a highway during a thunderstorm,” critic Lisa Russ Spaar wrote in a review of Johnson’s collection “A Metaphorical God.”
