Dixie State Symphony Band

The Dixie State College Symphony Band will makes its 2012-13 season debut with its annual Fall Concert on Friday, Oct. 5.

The DSC Symphony Band is under the direction of longtime conductor Gary Caldwell, who is entering his 34th-year as director of bands at DSC. The symphony band will perform six stirring compositions, beginning the Thomas Doss composition entitled “Black River Overture,” and “Sea Songs,” a piece composed in 1924 for the British military band by Ralph Vaughan-Williams.

The band will also perform “Kilimanjaro, An African Portrait,” a musical portrayal of the East African area in Kenya and Tanzania written by composer Robert Washburn, and “Fantasia on ‘Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,’” a folk-song inspired composition by Mark Camphouse.

In addition, the ensemble will perform “The Heart of Madness” by Mark Lortz, which is a thrilling musical painting of three of Edgar Allan Poe’s literary works, including The Bells,The Raven, and The Telltale Heart. The symphony band will conclude the evening with “Ghost Train,” an Eric Whitacre composition that tells the story that is deeply rooted in American folklore of the legendary Ghost Train, a supernatural machine that roars out of the night through forgotten towns and empty canyons.
